1. Our position

Most people who gamble do so without harm. A minority do not, and the difference is not a matter of character or willpower — it is a matter of how the activity interacts with a person’s circumstances, mood and finances at a particular time. We take the view that an operator cannot honestly claim to care about this while making the tools that limit play harder to find than the button that starts it.

So the controls described on this page are not an afterthought. Setting a deposit limit, a loss limit and a session time limit is a required step of registration: your account does not exist until you have chosen them, and they are active from the moment it opens. Every control is reachable from any page of this site in no more than two clicks, through the shield icon and the Responsible Gaming links in the footer.

2. Gambling is entertainment, not income

Every game offered here is built so that, over time, it returns less than it takes. That is not a flaw or a secret — it is the arithmetic that makes the business possible, and it applies no matter how you play. There is no system, staking plan, timing method or run of results that changes it.

Two consequences follow, and they are worth being blunt about:

  • Money you spend gambling should be money you can afford to lose entirely. Treat it like the cost of an evening out, not like an investment or a plan for paying something off.
  • Chasing losses makes them larger. A losing run is not "due" to turn. Each round is independent of the ones before it, and increasing your stakes to recover a loss increases the size of the next one.

We will never tell you that a game is about to pay, that a strategy is reliable, or that gambling can supplement your income. If you ever see anything on this site that suggests otherwise, tell us and we will remove it.

3. Signs that gambling may be becoming a problem

None of the following is proof of anything on its own. Several of them together, or one of them persistently, is worth taking seriously. Read the list honestly — the questions are about you, not about someone you have decided is worse.

  • You gamble for longer than you meant to, or return sooner than you meant to.
  • You spend more than you planned, or more than you can comfortably afford.
  • You gamble to win back money you have lost.
  • You borrow money, sell possessions or use money set aside for bills in order to gamble.
  • You hide how much you gamble, or lie about it, to family, friends or a partner.
  • You feel restless, irritable or low when you cannot gamble.
  • Gambling is the thing you reach for when you are stressed, bored, lonely or upset.
  • You have missed work, study, sleep or commitments because of gambling.
  • Someone close to you has expressed concern about your gambling.
  • You have tried to cut down or stop and found that you could not.
  • You think about gambling — past sessions, or the next one — when you are doing other things.
  • Gambling has caused arguments, or has affected a relationship that matters to you.

If you recognised yourself in several of these, ConnexOntario will talk it through with you at any hour on 1-866-531-2600, free and confidentially. PlaySmart also publishes a self-assessment you can complete on your own.

4. Your control tools

All of the tools below are set from the responsible gaming section of your account. Deposit, loss and session limits are chosen during registration and can be reviewed at any time afterwards.

Deposit limits

What it does. Caps the total you can add to your account within a daily, weekly or monthly period. Once you reach the cap, further deposits are refused until the period rolls over.

How to set it. Required at registration — at least one of daily, weekly or monthly. Afterwards, change it in your account settings. When it applies. A reduction or a new limit applies immediately. An increase is held for 24 hours and must then be confirmed by you. To cancel. Removing a limit follows the same delay and confirmation as raising one.

Loss limits

What it does. Caps your net losses — stakes less returns — over a rolling period. When you reach the limit, play stops for the remainder of that period even if you still have a balance.

How to set it. Required at registration; adjustable afterwards in your account settings. When it applies. Reductions immediately; increases after the 24-hour delay and your confirmation. To cancel. Same delay and confirmation as an increase.

Session time limits

What it does. Ends your session once you have been playing for the length you chose — 30, 60, 120 or 180 minutes. Time is counted while you are playing, not while you are logged in and idle.

How to set it. Required at registration; adjustable afterwards. When it applies. A shorter session limit applies to your next session immediately. A longer one takes effect after the delay and your confirmation. To cancel. As above.

Reality checks

What it does. Interrupts play at an interval you choose with a plain summary of how long you have been playing and how much you are up or down. You then choose whether to continue or to stop.

How to set it. In your account settings, at any time. When it applies. Immediately, from your next session. To cancel. Lengthening or switching off a reality check follows the same delay and confirmation as raising a limit.

Cooling-off period

What it does. Suspends your account for a short, fixed break — typically from 24 hours up to six weeks. You cannot deposit or play during it. Your balance stays where it is and can be withdrawn.

How to set it. In your account settings, or by writing to support. When it applies. Immediately. To cancel. You cannot. A cooling-off period runs its full length; neither you nor our staff can shorten it. That is the point of it.

5. How changes to your limits take effect

This rule applies to every tool on this page and it is deliberately one-sided:

Tightening a control takes effect immediately. Lowering a limit, shortening a session, adding a new limit or shortening a reality check interval applies as soon as you save it.

Loosening a control does not. Raising a limit, removing one, lengthening a session or switching off a reality check is held for 24 hours and then requires you to confirm it. If you do not confirm, nothing changes.

The reason is simple. The moment when someone most wants to raise a limit is usually the moment when raising it is the worst idea. The delay puts distance between the impulse and the effect, and gives you the chance to change your mind while it costs nothing.

You will always be told, in your account and by email, when a change has been requested, when it will take effect and how to cancel it.

6. Self-exclusion

Self-exclusion is a longer and firmer step than a cooling-off period. It is for when you have decided that you want to stop, and you want that decision to hold even when you later wish it did not.

What it does

  • Your account is closed to deposits and to all play for the period you choose.
  • You are removed from every marketing communication we send, regardless of any consent you gave previously.
  • Any balance remaining on your account is returned to you.
  • You cannot open a new account with us during the exclusion, and we will close any that is found.

How to start one

  • From the responsible gaming section of your account.
  • By writing to our support team at [SUPPORT EMAIL TBD].
  • By writing to our registered address, given at the end of this page.

You do not have to explain why, and you will not be asked to justify the decision or offered an alternative first. We will confirm the exclusion to you in writing.

When it takes effect, and how long it lasts

Immediately on request. You choose the length — commonly six months, one year, or a longer indefinite period. Ontario also operates a broader self-exclusion programme that covers participating gambling venues and sites across the province; ConnexOntario can explain how to enrol in that as well, if a single-operator exclusion is not what you need.

How it ends

A self-exclusion cannot be cancelled while it is running. Not by you, not by our support team, and not by anyone else on your behalf. When the period ends, your account is not reopened automatically: you must ask for it to be reopened, and there is a further waiting period before the request can take effect, so that reinstatement is never an impulse either.

If, during a self-exclusion, you receive anything from us that looks like marketing, please report it through our complaints procedure. That should not happen, and we want to know if it does.

7. Protecting minors

It is illegal for anyone under 19 to gamble in Ontario, and no exception is available for any reason. We check age at registration, on the server, and again during identity verification. Registrations that fail the age check are rejected and the details discarded.

Technology on our side is not enough on its own. If children or young people use a device you also use, please:

  • Never share your account details, and never leave a session open on a shared device.
  • Use a device passcode, and do not let the browser store your gaming password.
  • Consider filtering software that blocks gambling sites on the devices in your home. Products such as Net Nanny, Qustodio and Gamban are commonly used for this. We have no commercial relationship with any of them, and we do not receive anything if you use them.
  • Check whether your bank or card provider offers a gambling block — many do, and it applies across all operators at once.

Our advertising is designed not to appeal to people under 19. We do not use cartoons, animated characters, celebrities, current athletes or imagery associated with youth culture, and we do not place advertising where the audience is likely to be underage.

8. What we do on our side

  • Limit-setting is a mandatory step of registration and cannot be skipped.
  • Loosening a control is always delayed and always requires confirmation.
  • Bonuses, credits and other inducements are never advertised on public pages.
  • Marketing is sent only to players who have actively opted in, and never to a self-excluded player.
  • Our staff are trained to recognise signs of harm and to raise them rather than ignore them.
  • We monitor play patterns for indicators of harm and may contact a player, apply limits or close an account where that is warranted.
  • Help resources appear in the footer of every page of this site, not only on this one.

9. Getting help

If gambling has stopped being fun, talking to someone independent is a reasonable and ordinary thing to do. The services below are free, confidential and not connected to us in any way.

Support services in Ontario

Support is also available for family members and friends. You do not have to be the person gambling to call.

To reach us about any of the tools on this page, write to [SUPPORT EMAIL TBD] or to MGE DIGITAL CANADA INC., 22 Adelaide Street West, Suite 3400, Toronto, Ontario, M5H 4E3, Canada.
